Improving Connectivity Across Cornwall: The Mid Cornwall Metro Project

The Mid Cornwall Metro (MCM) project is a rail infrastructure enhancement programme designed to improve connectivity and capacity across mid-Cornwall, including the Newquay branch line.

The scheme forms part of a wider effort to strengthen regional rail services and improve the reliability and frequency of connections across the Cornish network. By upgrading key elements of the route infrastructure, the project aims to support a more resilient timetable and better passenger connectivity between communities across the region.

The project includes infrastructure and signalling upgrades between Newquay and Par, alongside works such as the reinstatement of a second platform at Newquay station and the installation of a new passing loop at Tregoss Moor. These improvements allow more than one train to operate simultaneously on what has historically been a largely single-line route.

By enabling additional train movements along the route, the Mid Cornwall Metro project supports the introduction of a more frequent and reliable service between Newquay, Par and the wider Cornish rail network. In the longer term, this enhanced connectivity helps strengthen links between the north and south coasts, supporting regional mobility and economic growth across Cornwall.

OSL Global continues to support Colas Rail on works associated with the programme. As part of this support, OSL provided Principles Testing and Functional Testing services during the main commissioning and subsequent stages of the works.

Testing and commissioning activities play a critical role in ensuring that signalling systems operate safely and reliably before entering service. By validating that new or modified systems function as intended and integrate correctly with existing infrastructure, testing supports the safe introduction of upgraded railway assets and operational changes.

Projects such as the Mid Cornwall Metro demonstrate how targeted infrastructure enhancements can unlock increased capacity on existing routes, improving the efficiency and resilience of regional rail networks.
