Railway 200 in Crewe

OSL Global recently attended the Railway 200 event at Crewe Station, joining people from across the rail industry and local communities to support a nationwide celebration marking 200 years of passenger rail in the UK.

Railway 200 is a year-long programme commemorating two centuries since the opening of the world’s first passenger railway in 1825. The initiative aims to recognise rail as one of Britain’s most influential industries, reflecting on its historic impact while also highlighting its ongoing importance to the economy, society and future connectivity.

The Crewe event, held from 15–19 January, formed part of the programme’s travelling Inspiration exhibition train, often described as a museum on rails! Designed to be accessible and engaging, the exhibition brought the story of rail to life through interactive displays, personal stories and insight into how the railway continues to shape everyday life across the UK.

Why Railway 200 matters

Initiatives like Railway 200 play an important role in widening understanding of what the railway represents today, not just as infrastructure, but as a foundation for communities, skills and opportunity.

Key themes running through the Crewe event included:

  • helping people, particularly younger generations, understand how rail underpins local economies and regional growth

  • showcasing the breadth of careers available across the sector, far beyond traditional perceptions of rail roles

  • reinforcing rail’s role as a sustainable backbone for future connectivity and lower-carbon travel

Hosting the event in Crewe, a town with deep and continuing links to the railway, gave these conversations added resonance. Crewe remains a significant rail hub and an important centre of rail expertise within the region, supported by local stakeholders including Cheshire East Council and wider industry partners.

Looking ahead

While Railway 200 provides an opportunity to reflect on the past, its focus is firmly forward-looking. Rail continues to play a central role in building a more sustainable, connected society, supporting mobility, economic resilience and long-term growth.

Events like the Crewe exhibition help open up vital conversations about skills, long-term investment and how the industry continues to evolve while remaining rooted in its core values of safety, collaboration and engineering excellence.

It was encouraging to see such strong engagement with the exhibition and the wider Railway 200 programme in Crewe, celebrating not just what rail has been, but what it continues to mean for communities across the UK.
